The drama opens in 1783, when Ross Poldark, played by Aidan Turner, returns from the American War of Independence to his beloved Cornwall, only to find his world in shambles. His father has died, the family mine is shuttered, his home lies in ruins, and his former sweetheart is now engaged to his cousin. Yet amid the rugged beauty of the Cornish coast, Ross discovers that hope, love, and purpose can still be found.
